Umrah means travelling for the purpose of visiting the Ka’bah, the sacred House of Allah, to perform the rites (manaasik), i.e., the actions and words reported in accounts of the Prophet’s Umrah, such as

“The performance of `Umrah is expiation for the sins committed between it and the previous ones.” (Al-Bukhari)
It is also reported that the Prophet, Sal’lallaho elayhi Wasal’lam said:
“Alternate between Hajj and `Umrah, because both get rid one’s poverty and sins just as the blacksmith’s bellows removes all impurities from metals like iron, gold and silver. The reward for Hajj Mabrur is nothing but the Paradise.” (At-Tirmidhi)
